Abstract

The article examines a propedeutics course in Russian as a foreign language, which includes a linguistic component based on the Total Physical Response (TPR) method and a sociocultural component that involves studying culture, traditions, and watching Soviet and contemporary Russian feature films with subtitles in the native/English language. The significance of foreign language propedeutics courses for developing linguistic intuition, reducing language anxiety, and fostering students’ sociocultural competence is substantiated. Special attention is given to the impact of audiovisual materials on students’ motivation, the development of listening skills, and the expansion of passive vocabulary. The article also outlines prospects for further empirical research on the effectiveness of this course.
