Abstract
The article is devoted to development of assessment criteria for both educational and creative works of art created by adult students during painting classes as well as finding out levels of their compositional thinking development. According to the authors, the problem under study has not been sufficiently resolved and requires in-depth research. The degree of complexity of solving educational and creative problems in painting classes when teaching adults is mentioned. The authors define scientific concepts “criterion” and “compositional thinking” and describe criteria for assessing quality of compositional thinking when doing pictorial educational and creative tasks, classified into four main groups. The paper defines the levels of compositional thinking development to which each criterion corresponds.
